When the American flag becomes worn, faded, torn, or otherwise unserviceable, it should be retired with dignity and respect. The Veterans of Foreign Wars is proud to help preserve this important American tradition.
Ensure the fire is of sufficient size and intensity to completely consume the flag in a respectful manner.
Carefully place the folded flag into the fire and allow it to burn completely.
Those participating may:
🇺🇸 Stand at attention
🇺🇸 Render a hand salute (if appropriate)
🇺🇸 Recite the Pledge of Allegiance
🇺🇸 Observe a brief moment of silent reflection.
After the flag has been completely consumed, safely extinguish the fire and respectfully bury the ashes.
Always comply with all local and state fire codes, burn bans, and ordinances before conducting a flag retirement ceremony.
VFW Post 5076 provides a Flag Retirement Collection Bin for worn or unserviceable United States flags.
The collection bin is located inside the Post, immediately to the left of the main entrance.
Members of the public are welcome to place flags in the collection bin at any time during normal Post operating hours. All flags placed in the bin will be retired respectfully and in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.
If you have questions about proper U.S. flag disposal or would like assistance with a flag retirement ceremony, please contact VFW Post 5076.
